BEST MOUNTS START IN THE FIELD
Field dressing. All hunters are familiar with this process.Let me add some tips to guarantee the best mount possible for your white tail and other big game. I know they are heavy, but never drag them by anything other than their antlers. When you pull on the skin you damage the tissue under the hair which later will cause the hair to come out. Bring a piece of heavy duty plastic that can be folded into a small shape. This will insure you a clean surface to drag your trophy on after field dressing out of the woods. Never drag your trophy against the way the hair grows. This will damage the hair. Always clean any blood off of coat as soon as possible. All hunters carry toilet paper. Well not all, but I never cared for leaves. Anyway, after field dressing and cleaning the blood off your trophy, pack the nose, mouth, entrance and exit wound with the toilet paper to prevent blood from getting back on the hide. Always make sure you do not have the ears, nose, mouth, or any facial parts restricted or bent. You have always heard your mother say " don't make that face, your face will stick that way. " Well if you mush that trophy's face it will stick that way. This rule applies even more when freezing. When capping for a shoulder mount, my rule is to cut a complete circle around your trophy 2 inches behind the front legs. Cut the front legs off 3 inches down from shoulder. Now split the back of the leg hide. You should now be able to roll the hide up to the head as you skin out your cape. Leave 3 to 4 inches of neck meat attached to the head for correct measurements. Keep as dry as possible. Make sure you have cleaned all blood from the cape and have repacked the nose, mouth, and any other area that could drain. Place the trophy in the freezer without bag for the fist hour. This will kill any bacteria that may be growing. Also plastic bag Triple the speed of bacteria growth and could damage your trophy. When cleaning the blood, urine of feces from the hide, a simple cotton ball with peroxide will do the trick. Just remember to follow that with a cotton ball with water after the stain is gone. When trophy's are small game or mounts you wish to have a life size mount done of, use your plastic to move, after cleaning blood, urine, and feces, don't forget to pack all ares. Even ears, anus, and eyes if draining. Get to your taxidermist as soon as possible. your taxidermist can get you the meat for and extra charge. If you plan on mounting later freeze for a hour with out bag. Then place in a bag making sure not to bend or mush, and freeze
BEST FISH MOUNTS START AT TIME OF CATCH
Just a little secret to getting the best fish mount possible. First a good taxidermist. No joke, it is a true art to prefect fish. When the fish is out of the water for a while it starts to loose it's color, and when a fish dries it will either be white or black. absolutely no color. Therefore your taxidermist can only assume what it looked like when you caught it. All that fish, and know fish realize there are hundreds of colors that change in the movement of the fish and in the light . When you plan your fishing trip remember three things. Camera, ice, bags of salt.
1. Immediately take pictures of both sides of your fish. Close up's.
2.Place your fish in a bag of salt. Table salt. Make sure the bag is big enough to have your fish flat with no bends or fins crumpled. Make sure the fish is completely covered.
3. Place the bag in ice until you can freeze.
The PH balance in the slimy covering on the fish changes within a few minutes after removing from the water. The table salt changes the PH balance back to it's original state as if the fish was still in the water. It will be the exact same color when your taxidermist starts the mounting process. With the taxidermist actually seeing the color for their self and your pictures at time of catch the taxidermist cant go wrong. The other plus to this is if you catch a bigger fish you had rather mount, you can remove the fish from the freezer at a later date, clean it and have it for dinner. The table salt acts as a preservative so the fish wont spoil. Now lets not forget our boat and the rod and reel while getting our camera, bags of salt, and ice. Make sure you post your fish story on here and at Joker's Outdoor Sportsman Forum. You can get the link from groups and the other is as simple as copy and paste. Good Luck
BEST BIRD AND WATERFOWL MOUNTS START AFTER THE HARVEST
After you take your bird or waterfowl trophy clean all blood immediately from feathers. Make sure you do not bend any feathers. Stuff cotton in the mouth, wound and anus. You can use a cotton ball and peroxide to clean any blood that will not come out with plain water. Make sure you follow the peroxide cleaning with plain water. Keep as dry as possible. Making sure no feathers are bent and all lay down the way they are suppose to. Slide the bird or water fowl head first down in a stocking. Lay in the freezer for one hour before placing in a plastic bag and freezing. If you desire the meat you may have a taxidermist that will process the skin and save your meat. Take care to not ruffle or bend feathers, put something heavy on top of it in the freezer, or damage the bill or beak. For turkey, geese, and swan wrap in a sheet like wrapping a baby freeze for one hour, then place in plastic bag and freeze. Guys if you don't know how to wrap a baby get your girl or wife to show you. Good luck. Spur
